What does a sign from God look like? One of my favorite movie scenes about asking for a sign is in Jim Carey’s “Bruce Almighty”. In the movie, Bruce has been fired from his job and driving along he asks God for a sign. He immediately passes a DOT “Caution Ahead” sign, but takes no notice. Then a DOT truck packed with street signs of various shapes and messages pulls in front of him. He still does not take notice. Finally, after crashing his car and throwing his rosary beads into the water, he demands a sign from God, after which his pager immediately rings. Not recognizing the number, he chooses not to respond… Did God choose to not respond to his pleas, or was he simply not tuned into the ways God was responding?
In a world where many are yearning to hear from God, the simple fact is that we might just be looking at the wrong things or expecting a different result. Yes, brilliant stars in the sky are eye catching, but sometimes God communicates through other, less spectacular means – maybe even the birth of a child, or a man willing to stick with his fiancé in less than ideal circumstances.
Join us for worship on this 4th Sunday in Advent as we consider all of the ways God may be giving us signs, and even the way God might just be using you as a sign for others!
