Today, I want to invite you back to your elementary science class and the lesson on potential energy versus kinetic energy. (no groaning!) Potential energy is energy that is stored in an object, like a rubber band that is stretched and waiting to snap back. Kinetic energy is when that potential energy is unleashed and allowed to realize it’s potential of doing work.

This same principal applied to many situations in our lives where something has great potential that hasn’t been unleashed: a new unopened item that hasn’t yet been used for its purpose; a pencil that’s never been sharpened; a skilled pianist that’s never played for others to hear; a battery that’s never powered a tool. You get the idea. There is great potential in all of these things to benefit others, but it’s never been tapped into.

This Sunday, we’ll consider the Potent Potential that lies within our faith to change our lives and change our world, but remains hidden or untapped. As we do, we invite you to be thinking about times and places where you’ve shielded your faith from others, and what might have changed if your were willing to let your light shine. I hope you’ll join me.
