Do you love yourself? Really, do you love you? Could you ever see yourself declaring to someone else, “I love myself!” Sounds weird, right? Well, sort of.
Over the past two weeks, we’ve been studying how the Holy Spirit leads us to Love God with all of our heart, soul, mind and strength, and how that same Spirit leads us to Love our Neighbors, even when we don’t agree with them. But there’s a third part of the Great Commandment that we don’t often focus too much time on: loving ourselves.
Of course, like everything else, there are healthy and unhealthy ways to love ourselves. Take the story of Narcissus, for example. He was loved by a young woman named Echo, but he could never receive her love, and so he rejected her. As punishment, the goddess Nemesis caused Narcissus to fall in love with his own reflection, and he spent his entire life staring at his reflection until he died, and a flower by the same name grew in his place. Definitely an example of unhealthy love for ones self!
So what does healthy self love look like? How can we love ourselves in a way that isn’t self centered or conceited? Join us for worship this Sunday at 10 a.m. (or whenever you are able to stream us online), as we continue our journey of coming alive in the Spirit of God by examining how the Holy Spirit leads us in loving ourselves. I hope you’ll join us for worship at 10:00 a.m. online or in person.
