How well do you know God, I mean really KNOW God? Sounds like an odd question to ask people who worship God on a regular basis, right? I mean, you are all intelligent people who love God, of course you know God, but can anyone really know everything there is to know about God? For instance, how many names can you come up with for God? To get you started, you could name the trinity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, but how many more could you come up with? 20? 50? 100? There are many names for God that are used in our scriptures – over 100 by some counts – and each one offers a different understanding or attribute of God. Why do you suppose there are so many? I mean, most of us only have one name, maybe two or three if we’re lucky. Why so many names for God? For me, it is a testimony to God’s greatness that goes beyond our human ability to describe. It affirms that we worship a God that astounds us, surprises us, and can’t be nailed down (we tried that, remember?). This Sunday, I hope you’ll join us to worship God, who is bigger, who inspires and transforms, who unsettles us a little bit too. Let’s come before God with more questions than answers and ready to be transformed by grace. I hope you’ll join us online or in-person this Sunday at 10 a.m. |
