One of my favorite poems is “The Road Less Traveled” by Robert Frost. “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood” it begins, signifying the choices we all must make in our lives, some more consequential than others. He goes on to describe his discernment process of looking down each path as far as his eyes would take him – certainly farther than most people who rely on their gut instincts or following the crowd would go. In the end, Frost “took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.”
We are all creations of God imbued with free will, that is the ability and opportunity to make our own decisions, even if they are in opposition to God’s deepest desire for us. And as Jesus concludes his opening sermon, he highlights for all of us the importance of our choices in life. Will we follow the road that has been well traveled, or will we follow a different path? Just as Frost concluded in his poem, our choices will make all the difference for our personal live and the vitality of the world around us. In the end, the choice is yours.
I hope that you will choose to join us for worship this Sunday at 10 a.m. as we come to the conclusion of our Lenten journey of Making the Road by Walking through Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. Our worship service will be available online or in person.
