Have you heard the joke about the driver who was arrested under suspicion of driving a stolen car? It seemed the driver was tailgating another car, which stopped at a yellow light at an intersection. Incensed that the driver of the other car didn’t run the light, they started to honk the horn and hurl all sorts of curses and insults at them. When asked why the officer arrested them, the officer replied, “when I saw you acting the way you did and then saw the ‘honk if you love Jesus’ and ‘follow me to Sunday school’ bumper stickers and the chrome plated Christian fish symbol on the back of the car, I could only assume that the car must have been stolen.”

Most of us in one way or another try to portray a certain image of ourselves. Some of us want to act younger than we are, some wealthier, others more popular or successful, and, yes, some more perfect in our faith. But what happens when our outward appearances have little resemblance to our inner hearts? How do we align our exterior and interior lives? And why is Jesus so interested in the inner workings of our souls? Isn’t good action good enough?

Join us for worship this Sunday at 10 a.m. as we continue our Lenten journey of Making the Road by Walking through Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. Our worship service will be available online or in person.
